Today marks the 500 day count down until the pinnacle event for international netball, the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 (NWC) at Sydney Olympic Park.
We took some time out to ask Kath Tetley, the NWC General Manager of Fan Engagement, Community & Legacy, a few questions about how the planning is going.
How do you describe NWC 2015?
It is basically the Olympic Games for our sport!
In short, the competition involves 16 teams playing 64 matches over 10 days. The majority of matches will be held at Allphones Arena, but we’re also thrilled that we’ll be able to showcase the magnificent new Netball Central
The participating teams are determined through a mix of international rankings and a series of five qualifying events which will be held around the world between May and September this year.
Expect could see the likes of Malawi, South Africa, Barbados, Fiji, Uganda and Wales mix it up on the court alongside the traditional powers of Australia, New Zealand, England and Jamaica…
What can fans expect?
Our aim is to create a truly unforgettable fan experience, bringing together netball lovers from all corners of the world.
We’re aiming to achieve world record crowds, heart pumping experiences for fans and to create lasting memories for the netball and broader sporting families, right here at Sydney Olympic Park.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on the full range of fan experiences and opportunities, which will occur prior to and during the event, and looking at what lasting legacies these ideas and engagement strategies can build for the sport beyond 2015.
A big part of my job involves working with key stakeholders from within Sydney Olympic Park and around the country to pull together passionate and unleashed ideas – I am excited about it…can you tell?!
You’ve just set up your office at Sydney Olympic Park, what’s it like to be located here?
Sydney Olympic Park is the competition home for Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015, so it’s critical that we understand and embrace all of the incredible opportunities that Sydney Olympic Park can provide the fans, teams, officials and netball community as a whole.
A key event area is the introduction of the Fan Zone we’ll be building in the Park. We’re looking at all possibilities for the Fan Zone while we’re in the planning phase…the sky’s the limit!
Sydney Olympic Park has hosted some of the greatest netball matches in the past 25 years. In fact, the last time Australia hosted the World Cup was in 1991 and some incredible matches were played to a full house of netball supporters at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. The Sports Centre now hosts sold out NSW Swifts matches each year, with Allphones Arena complementing the season roster of games. Who can forget the Swifts’ inaugural ANZ Championship Grand Final victory in 2008, or the Australia v New Zealand world record crowd attendance in 2011!
This event is a wonderful opportunity for the Park to again host an unforgettable netball event – Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.
